Bank Holidays before I had kids always gave me this magical feeling that anything was possible. Inevitably, though, I ended up lounging around in bed until noon then basically wasting the day trying to think of cool and interesting things to do with myself. Those days are well and truly over, and quite frankly I wish I’d appreciated that time in bed more!

These days, the bank holiday needs to be adequately prepared for days, if not weeks, in advance. You know the saying; fail to plan, plan to fail? Well failing to plan the bank holiday has every chance of resulting in a miserable few days for all! Even if your plan is to do nothing, plan for it and see it through!

If, like me, the idea of staying in all weekend is giving you the jitters already, then here are some top ideas to get you out of the house over the bank holiday weekend.

Bank Holiday Kids West

Great British Food Festival – Bowood House, Calne

Saturday 26 – monday 28 August. 10am-5pm daily. Tickets: Adult £9* Kids £5*, Family (2 adults/3 children) £25*

The weather is forecast to be pretty good this bank holiday (can you believe it?!) so really I don’t see what else you could need. Sun, food, family, and CAKE! what’s more, if you fancy getting in for free, there’s still time to enter the cake off! You’ll get free entry and be in with a  chance to win a prize too!

If you really feel like going for it and scoring points for “most awesome parent of the bank holiday” you could spend a day baking with the kids and prepare your cake off entry as a family!

Bank Holiday Kids West

International Street Festival, Devizes

sunday 27/Monday 28 August. All day. Tickets: FREE (buy a program to plan your trip in advance for £1)

With the weather being set to be nice, The Devizes Street Festival looks like it’ll have all bases covered for the weekend. There’s a huge line-up already confirmed, including food and drink stalls (yes, booze too!), street performers, music acts and tons more.

Well worth a visit if you’re at a loose end or need to get out and let the kids run wild for an hour!

Castle Combe Family Cycling Day

sunday 27 August. 11:30am-4pm. Tickets: Adult £5, Kids £2, Family (quantity not specified) £10

This sounds like a really fun day out! Literally open to everyone, they boast the day is ideal whether you’re “2 years old or 102 years old”! From a circuit lap challenge to balance bikes for toddlers, it really does seem like the kind of thing the whole family could enjoy.

There’s somewhere to buy food onsite, but the website also states that there is lots of space to sit and watch the kids and set yourselves up with a picnic. That makes this the best event on a budget, and it’s one I definitely recommend giving a go!

Bath Cats & Dogs Home Fun Day

Monday 28 August. 11am-4pm. Tickets: Adults £4.50, kids £2.50, Family (2 adults/2 kids) £12

For me, this event has no competition! There’ so much on offer at this event that you’ll literally be spoiled for choice! There’s the obvious animal themed events like dog agility shows and performances, plus the chance to let your own pet have ago. Then there are loads of artisan stalls to peruse, the cats and dogs home charity tent, and a BBQ which even offers vegetarian options.

The kids zone includes a bouncy castle, face painting, soft play and ball pit, and loads more! Even better than that is the beer (and, of course, other beverages) tent! There are loads of giant games, fun fair style games, and a raffle to get involved in too.

My personal fave is the tea room and tea tent! And just to top it off the crew and engine from Avon Fire & Rescue will also be there to meet, while the Devon & Somerset Fire Service’s dog Kesia will be demonstrating her amazing search and rescue skills!

I mean, really… This is the bank holiday event to make all other bank holiday events shiver in their boots, right?!
